About Us

The first step in success.

Reading Friends is a prestigious academic preschool that uses its own curriculum to teach to all learning styles through a multi-sensory approach based on Orton-Gillingham principles. All children graduate from this program with the confidence and the tools they need for future success in school. The teachers focus not only on the academic development of the students, but each teacher is dedicated to providing a loving, nurturing, and empowering environment for every child to feel confident and successful both inside and outside the classroom.

The Phonics Advantage curriculum is a language-based program that is the heart of our proprietary curricula. It is a multi-sensory teaching technique involving the total child. Children receive structured academic experiences that produce a strong foundation in reading, writing, math, spelling and expression. The Reading Friends program is designed to provide successful opportunities for all students, regardless of their learning styles.

Children have daily outside playground time and a mid-morning snack where they experiment with social interaction and cooperation. Good manners and kindness are praised as teachers help the children learn social etiquette and the qualities of good leaders.

Reading Friends believes children are best prepared for school when they are able to practice a real world school day; therefore, Reading Friends creates an academic environment that mirrors the school environment in which they will transition to upon completion of our program. Reading Friends’ school year begins in September and runs through May.

Reading Friends serves a finite amount of children and strives to maintain the nurturing intimacy that creates a solid foundation of self-confidence in the classroom. Our typical student to teacher ratio are as follows:

  • Developmental- 12:2

  • Primary- 12:1

  • Pre-K - 13:1

  • K1 Kindergarten - 22:2

Thank you for considering our unique program. We hope that you will allow us the opportunity to be a part of your child’s early educational needs.

History

The founder of the original Reading Friends, Nancy Thompson Spencer, was told in the fourth grade that she would never make it to college. Nancy proved this prediction wrong by earning an undergraduate degree in education along with an endorsement in special education from Texas Christian University. She continued her post-graduate work at East Texas State University and Dean Memorial Learning Center at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital where she became a Certified Academic Language Therapist.

During the first five years of Reading Friends’ existence, the clinic experienced persistent community demand and steady growth that produced the need for a bigger location and expanded curriculum. To accommodate this demand, Reading Friends moved from the back of a bookstore and opened the little red school in West Fort Worth. Reading Friends has continued to serve discerning families for more than 35 years with it's uniquely designed multi-sensory curriculum that ensures success for all children.

Marsha Wesley, owner of the Keller location, opened the first Reading Friends franchise after witnessing the success of her own children. Her two youngest children excelled academically after receiving the strong educational foundation that Reading Friends provides. It truly is the first step to success!
